Business might be the last thing you want to think about over your Christmas break, but in order to improve on the year before, this time of year is the perfect time to begin creating a better business. Here are our 6 easy steps to helping you improve, with only a small effort!

1. Recuperate

Tradies work so physically hard during the year, first and foremost, your Christmas break should be spent resting and recuperating. Take some solid time off, catch up on some sleep, exercise gently and enjoy friends and family. Put yourself first during this period, you’ve earned it!

2. Reflect

During your break is the perfect time to reflect over the year that was. Write a list of all things you did well over the year and the ones you could improve on. Be honest, the more thorough you are with this step, the better the result next year will be.

Also, be critical, list why things worked, and better yet, why they didn’t. This exercise will lead to real growth within your business.

3. Look Forward

While reflecting is a fantastic exercise, looking forward is equally so. This is your chance to dream about what the next 12 months can look like. Don’t be afraid to dream big, and even set yourself visual reminders on what it is you would like to achieve.

4. Plan

Now that you have your dreams set, you’ll need a plan to get there. It might be finding more staff or increasing your profit margin. Regardless of your goals, each business needs a plan to get you to where you want to be. If you haven’t reviewed your business plan lately, now is the time. If you don’t have one, get one!

5. Network

So much of what we do in business relies on a strong network. We need the right people in place to work with us, and we need to be known by the right people to get the work through the door. Our break time is a great time to begin networking and better still, it can be done from your phone. Be sure to use the goodwork app over your break and begin building your relationships, also check out the Tradies in Business Facebook group for different discussions around the industry.

6. Get Educated

Knowledge is power, and when we first go into our trade businesses, there is a lot we don’t know. Use your free time on your break, to seek out some education around the subjects you are not sure on, especially those you identified as weaknesses in step 2.

Head on over to the Tradies in Business website where you can find mountains of business information, podcasts, blog post and freebies.

Remember, many of your competitors will be slacking off over their Christmas break. If you are really looking to improve your business in 2019, now is the time to start.
