First of all what is emotional intelligence or EQ? Emotional intelligence helps you build better relationships both personally and at work.It is the ability to understand and recognise your own emotions and the emotions of others.

There are 5 key areas to emotional intelligence, Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills. Developing strong EQ skills allows you to recognise and understand what others are going through, and then help you control how you react to that situation.

Having strong emotional intelligence, allows you to become a leader in your trade business, by having control over our own emotions, and showing empathy and understanding to others.

Think of it this way, your client is reacting to something you’ve done or said, depending on who you are and your level of EQ you can react by blowing up, putting them in their place, retreating and avoiding the confrontation. With strong EQ you can lead your client through this situation with empathy and understanding, while preventing your own emotions from creating a reaction in you.

When leading a team, many difficult situations will arise that will require a high level of EQ to ensure that you can guide your team. Likewise, EQ can assist in developing members of your team, as you are able to empathise with your workers.

Communication is the number one requirement for good business management. Emotional intelligence will increase your ability to communicate clearly with those around you. This then has a flow on throughout your trade business, as through communication comes a deeper understanding.

For tradies this might mean you have a better outcome from your subbies as they have clear direction on when and how to get the job done.

For clients, you’ll find better satisfaction levels as you have been able to communicate clearly the outcomes they can expect, and you then fulfil.

Large employers are now screening for emotional intelligence levels when hiring, it is only a matter of time before we see this practice in all levels of employment. Now is a great time to get ahead of the pack and work on your EQ as an industry leader.
